When Your Words Come Back to Bite You in the Butt

Writing over at Slate, Joe Conason dug up some of the right-wing response to the first woman nominated to be vice president.

Here, for your reading pleasure, is a nugget from Bill Buckley's National Review, in August 1984:
The Democrats will attempt to project the issue as 'whether a woman can be Vice President,' a point the Republicans can cheerfully concede, returning to the question of whether this woman in particular should be the Vice President…. Mrs. Ferraro is manifestly an affirmative-action nominee. She has been in the House only since 1979 and cannot be said, on the record, to be qualified to be President….

What a day this has been for the GOP.

Now it's not if, it's when. How soon will Palin be leaving the ticket?

TPM notes that Intrade has opened up a new contract: Sarah Palin to be withdrawn as Republican VP nominee

This is a way to buy futures (i.e., gamble) on the proposition. It's going up.

Re McCain's remark, "She's a partner and a soulmate," (WTF?) there is this:

"Thus grief still treads upon the heels of pleasure:
"Married in haste, we may repent at leisure."

William Congreve, 1693

(Though I doubt there will be much leisure in the McCain camp.)
