Irony Alert: Palin's Unmarried Teenage Daughter is, Ahem, Pregnant

GOP far-right conservatives in Oklahoma (see the gushing over at the McCarville Report Online) and elsewhere have been dancing in the aisles since John McCain nominated the little-know and extremely lightweight Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the GOP's vice presidential choice. Palin's one of them—a Bible-thumpin', gun-totin' True Believin' Conservative.

Now it turns out that there's a little tarnish on Palin's right-wing halo. Bristol, her 17-year-old daughter, is pregnant. And unmarried.

Oops!

Last time we checked, folks liked Palin were advocates of abstinence-only sex education, a policy that critics have assailed as mostly ineffective.

We haven't studied the issue ourselves, we we do have some recent experience with raging teenage hormones and we too have been skeptical of abstinence-only policies. And based on a sample that includes one Alaska teenager, we'd say the skeptics were right.

So how will this pregnancy play in Wingnut Land? They're likely to smooth over this little wrinkle since Bristol is planning on marrying the baby's father and keeping the child.

Fair enough. But this doesn't reflect well on all those high-minded moral values that the Right-Wingers keep hitting the rest of us over the head with.

Yes, Palin is probably not going to be the spokeswoman for abstinence-only sex education. Or maybe she will...

I'm not sure I follow this. How does young Miss Palin's lack of pre-marital abstinence reflect badly on a moral stance that says sex should be practiced within the confines of marriage?

It is merely a more public data point in support of the findings of study after study that abstinence-only sex education is ineffective in preventing or delaying teenagers from having sex.

Maybe Ms. Palin, with her busy life outside the home, didn't have enough time to inculcate the value of abstinence. Yeah, that's it.

It does seem that this value is observed mostly in the "breech."

Abstnence certainly is the best approach, but it certainly isn't the only one. Regardless, what's your point, here? Are GOP far-right conservatives (of which I do not consider myself one) the only people on earth that are never allowed to make a mistake? And do far right liberals only exist to avoid the label of "hypocrite?"

Put a little sensitivity in your "alternative-ness."

My point is pretty obvious.

Making political hay on the basis of how right you are with God, then being exposed as a hypocrite. Only the hardcore right could not find that distasteful. Or maybe Springer fans.

I have learned that there is nothing they cannot look past as long as the candidate parrots the "God, guns, and gays" lines.

The real question mark here though is not so much Palin's antics and peccadillos as McCain's impulsiveness and poor judgment. He is showing us just what kind of President he would be, and it isn't pretty.

If you think McCain/Palin have shown you the stuff of which the executive branch should be made, you have the right to vote for them.
