Tulsa's First Baptist Sends Message of Pride

Let's give credit where credit is due

First Baptist Church of Tulsa did a very good thing Tuesday when it ran a full-page ad in the Tulsa World recognizing the inauguration of Barack Obama.

"Today is historic," the downtown church noted.

The text continued:
A little over 200 years ago, the White House was built largely from slave labor.

Only 150 years ago, the state of the Union were at war over the issue of state rights. The volatile issue? Slavery.

40 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther Kind Jr. led the nation to acknowledge the civil rights of all citizens.

And today, the first black President will be sworn into office.

Put aside personal politics and be proud.
Well said, First Baptist. We're not of the Baptist persuasion ourselves, but we salute the church for its generosity of spirit and good will. Tulsans of all stripes should salute the church as well.

As the ad noted, quoting Scripture, "Treat everyone with dignity. Revere God. Respect the government. 1 Peter 2."
