WSJ's Peggy Noonan on Sarah Palin: 'Rather Horrifying'

More and more thoughtful conservatives are weighing in on soon-to-be-ex-Gov. Sarah Palin. It's not pretty:

In television interviews she was out of her depth in a shallow pool. She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them. She couldn't say what she read because she didn't read anything. She was utterly unconcerned by all this and seemed in fact rather proud of it: It was evidence of her authenticity. She experienced criticism as both partisan and cruel because she could see no truth in any of it. She wasn't thoughtful enough to know she wasn't thoughtful enough. Her presentation up to the end has been scattered, illogical, manipulative and self-referential to the point of self-reverence. "I'm not wired that way," "I'm not a quitter," "I'm standing up for our values." I'm, I'm, I'm.

In another age it might not have been terrible, but here and now it was actually rather horrifying.

Just the latest GOP grotesque jostling for position among the other GOP grotesques on the public stage. Give 'em all the hook.

Another sighting...

David Brooks, NYT columnist to Nora O’Donnell of MSNBC:

BROOKS: You know, all three of us spend a lot of time covering politicians and I don’t know about you guys, but in my view, they’re all emotional freaks of one sort or another. They’re guaranteed to invade your personal space, touch you. I sat next to a Republican senator once at dinner and he had his hand on my inner thigh the whole time. I was like, ehh, get me out of here.

HARWOOD: What?

BROOKS: I can only imagine what happens to you guys.

O’DONNELL: Sorry, who was that?

BROOKS: I’m not telling you, I’m not telling you.

Who is the bigger freak here, the GOP senator or the GOP groupie?

Peggy Noonan writes that Sarah Palin is "self-referential to the point of self-reverence"?

An understatement. Try "delusions of royalty."

Mrs. Palin actually said she loves Alaska so much that she's "sacrificing her title" for the state.

A revealing slip by Palin, equating her public office with her beauty titles.

More from conservative Andrew Sullivan on Palin:

"I think that you have to proceed under the assumption that this is a joke of a candidate and a symptom of a political party in the middle of a mental breakdown."

From the Times Online (U.K.): Palin leads the right into a reality TV vortex

Openly gay conservative Sullivan on David Brooks (quoted above):

David Brooks' Inner Thigh

"Another victim of collapsing manners. Mercifully, I avoid dinners with Republican senators. It's usually far too gay a scene for me."

Republican strategist Pete Wehner:

"If Sarah Palin becomes the face and future of the G.O.P., it would take a huge step toward securing its position as a minority party for many years to come."

Here's to many more years of the media spotlight for "Moose-o-lini."
