We don't care for conspiracy theories, but it strikes us that the timing on Cheney's trip is, well, a tad too convenient. Most vice presidents, after all, would love to be basking in convention glory, wouldn't they?
Then again, Cheney is not most vice presidents. He's one of the nation's least popular politicians, a man whose every instinct runs toward secrecy and deception. In Cheney's world view, pesky notions like accountability, transparency, and the public's right to know hinder the proper functioning of (secret) government.
Last time we checked, however, the people were still sovereign and Cheney remained a public servant, not a king.

You gotta be woofin' me. In theory, maybe. But in reality? The Imperial Federal Government took over decades ago.
We take your point, Dan. But we are neither that pessimistic nor that cynical. We still believe the people can (and sometimes will) change things for the better. For instance, George Bush's low approval ratings in recent years are well deserved and, to our way of thinking, that reflects well on the judgment of the American people.
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."
A fairly pessimistic, if accurate, statement by old honest Abe. There still seems to be a large percentage of Americans in the first of the classes he names. But maybe there is hope for the American people after all.
"You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on." --- George W. Bush
