The Bush Terror Legacy: Exploitation and Fear

AT's nomination for "Quote of the Year," from Jane Mayer's The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals:
Fear and anxiety were exploited by zealots and fools.

--Phillip Zelikow, director of the 9/11 Commission

Or,

Zealots and fools were exploited by (the use of) fear and anxiety.

Works both ways.

I don't credit bin Laden with understanding Americans, or their government and media that well.

But if he had launched the 9/11 attack with an understanding of how it would play out with Bush at the helm, he would have to be counted as brilliant for getting so much destruction out of so small an investment.

The USA couldn't have been hurt as much by having a foreign power directly pulling the President's strings as it has been by having Bush, Cheney and company in the driver's seat at that critical time.
