Sen. Vitter's Republican Hypocrisy

AltTulsa has never believed the moral superiority of the Republican Right. Seems to us that these folks have just as many flaws and failings as the rest of us.

Perhaps more. Witness the case of Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, named last week the so-called DC Madam scandal. Sen. Vitter ended his self-imposed seclusion today, admitting his guilt and declaring that God and his wife have forgiven him.

We don't know about God. But we do know a former U.S. Representative from Louisiana who has spoken about the moral problem of illicit sexual relations.

That political leader was perfectly clear about the fate of President Bill Clinton when he was involved in a sex scandal in 1998.

President Clinton should be impeached and removed from office because he is morally unfit to govern.

You guessed it: That official was none other than one Rep. David Vitter. Want to take your own advice, Sen. Vitter?

I'm not at all sure that the Republican Right believes in their moral superiority, either--more often than not, it seems to me that we/they are perfectly willing, even eager, to admit and confirm just what you say--that they have just as many flaws and failings as the rest of us. That is the reason we need a Savior; to embrace Him is admit the fallen nature of one's humanity.

Further, while not wishing to gloss over Senator Vitter's sin, or mine--or yours, for that matter--as unimportant, I cannot help but note that when it comes to implying moral superiority, it is difficult to take a back seat to many on the left. It often seems to me that the left in general sees itself as morally superior for a variety of reasons, such as its willingness to redistribute wealth, and its eagerness to withdraw from Iraq.

Oh, well, then, the Right's humility certainly more than cancels out their hypocrisy. Where do I put put my "X"?

It's not like Dems don't suffer the same kind of impediments to squeaky-clean...ask Wild Bill. He may not even lie about it since it would not be under the oath of a Federal Grand Jury.

Now I understand even better. Anything and everything the Right does wrong can be balanced by a citation of SeƱor Clinton. What a godsend! I put my "X" on the Right.

Hello Dan: We'll concede the point on moral superiority. There seems to be plenty to go around, the left included. But we still think Sen. Vitter ought to live up to the standards he has professed.

We all have shortcomings. A lot of us have "do-overs" and a lot of us wish we would have made the right decisions the first time. I don't think it has anything to do with Right or Left. It's actually a pretty shallow conclusion. Actually, it reminds me of the mindset of so many radio, tv, and print squawkers. However, I understand what you are saying. We should all try to do better than these guys.

Agreed, we all have shortcomings. While it certainly seems that Republican politicians have more than their rightful share of them, that's not the point. The point is, these GOP guys run around tooting the "family values" horn, asking voters to credit them with superior personal qualities on their own say-so, then get caught with their pants down. That's called "hypocrisy". Whoever voted for them on that basis got hoodwinked.

To quote a great thinker, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."
