Sen. Inhofe's Double-Reverse Political Logic: Losing Specter is Really Winning

Oklahoma's own Jim Inhofe, our U.S. senator, can't win for losing. Commenting on Arlen Specter's switch from the Republican Party to the Democrats, Inhofe unwound this political winner:
There is no evidence more visible that the American people are already rebelling against the far-left agenda than Senator Arlen Specter switching parties to become a Democrat. He did this for one reason, and that is his advisers told him he couldn’t retain his Senate seat as a Republican. In other words, the same people who supported Senator Specter six years ago have soundly rejected him today.

That, my friends, sounds like 1994. The extreme liberal agenda is not sellable to the American people. Just wait and see.
Americablog's John Aravosis offered this response to Inhofe's impeccable logic:
Well, in that case, I don't think we've lost nearly as much as we deserve. Perhaps Olympia Snowe and a few more Republicans can join the Democratic Party, and then really teach the Dems a lesson.

And let me add, who do we Democrats have in the Senate who is as nutty, and ridiculous - not to mention, angry and intolerant - as people like Jim Inhofe? The Republican party is all leftovers now.

The old guy needs to be taking Aricept so he can hang on to his few remaining wits. But he doesn't seem to need many of them to win elections in Oklahoma.

This post makes no sense. Specter is a senator that bragged about being a republican during Reagan, the height of republicanism (never mind that Reagan hated the guy), and then faced with opposition brags about switching to the democrats at the height of their power. Did you not see the press conference? In one breath he states that he is not going to be identified by labels, then announces he is switching labels!

Inhofe was spot on, its not bad logic, its calling a spade a spade. The only conservative thing in recent memory Specter came out for was the anti-card check legislation. A moderate democrat is the perfect category for Specter.

Specter's switch was quite rational.

A large number of moderate Republicans in his state have become Democrats. That move left only the harder core right-wingers in his state GOP.

Specter barely won against a hard-right guy in the primary of his previous election. How would he fare against that same guy after losing the moderates in his party?

He could read the handwriting. He made a rational choice.

Where he may be going wrong now is by not actually voting as a Democrat. A decent Democratic candidate could quite possibly defeat him in the Democratic primary if he alienates too many Democrats as he seems on course to do.

But to say this whole turn of events in any way strengthens the GOP's position makes no sense. It only highlights their marginalization.

Specter went wrong, all right. The Democratic caucus just stripped him of seniority in all his committees.

Way to go, Dems! That's exactly what needed to be done. No more Kumbaya for the GOP. Serve them their own Koolaid.
