The Price of Recklessness: Bush's $600 Billion War

On this Veteran's Day, let's honor veterans young and old who have served our nation—and continue serving today.

Let's also recall George Bush's foolish decision to invade Iraq, an elective war that has cost far too many American lives—nearly 4,000 killed and many thousands more wounded.

Let's also acknowledge the financial costs of Bush's stupidity, a price that all of us continue to pay:
If the Bush administration succeeds in its latest request for funding for the war in Iraq, the total cost would rise to $611.5 billion, according to the National Priorities Project, a nonprofit research group.

Well, if that's not a big enough cash hemorrhage, Bush can always send a few more truckloads of unmarked $100 bills to Iraq.

On the personnel side, I'm sure he intends to squander many more lives in Iran before his term is up.

Not denigrating your opinion on the war in any way--perhaps ironically, it is more of a classic paleocon opinion than anything else--but just to offer some perspective, I believe our nationwide compliance cost--what we spend just to comply with our nation's insane tax code--approaches 500 billion per year. If I recall correctly, anyway.

Not that 600 billion isn't a lot of money. It clearly is. But complaining about it is kind of like complaining about the cost of groceries when you've spent almost as much buffing your car.

Yesterday's 'con: "a million here. and a million there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money."

Today's 'con: "a trillion here, a trillion there..."

The quote only had to be updated by an order of a million over the course of 40 years. Who could complain?

And who cares if the Pentagon lost 190,000 AK-47's? What kind of nitpicker gets exercised over something like that?

And can you imagaine the reaction of "Fox and Friends" if these things happened under DEMOCRATIC leadership?

Congress' Joint Economic Committee just put out a report. The average cost per family of the Iraq/Afghanistan adventure so far is over $20K per family.

I don't know about your family, but for mine, "a thousand here, a thousand there, and pretty soon you're talking real money."
