Gun Headline of the Day: It's Often About Suicide, not Protection

Now that we have an individual right to own a handgun, we note this unfortunate U.S. gun statistic, courtesy of CNN.com:
Surprising fact: Half of gun death are suicides

Gun owners often use weapons on themselves, not intruders

Let's see: half of 31,000 gun deaths--that would be...15,500.

That's appalling. Terrible that someone would want to take their lives.

I mean, think about it: that's 36% of the number of total traffic deaths, and about 86% of the traffic deaths caused by drunk driving.

Look, death is tragic. But this is a case of straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel. We kill more people with cars every year than we do with guns--about 13,000 more, as a rule. You gotta put things in perspective.

"Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks."
