Here's the latest from North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Tom Fetzer:
"Recent events, regardless of who is to blame, have made it difficult if not impossible for you to lead the party in the direction that it needs to go,” Fetzer wrote in a letter to Steele today. “...I believe that the best service you can render to your party at this critical juncture is to graciously step aside and allow the party to move on from this current quagmire."

Republicans are facing the fact that as bad as it might be having Michael Steele as Chairman going on TV every day saying boffo, ridiculous things, there's a still worse possible fate: firing him and having him go on TV every day saying boffo, ridiculous things and trashing the folks who fired him. Tough pickle.
Rightwing columnist Matt Barber says:
"'Progressives' are like pig farmers. In an effort to bury opposing viewpoints they sling pejorative slop, labeling as 'bigot,' 'hater,' 'wingnut' or 'racist' those with whom they disagree. It’s the height of intellectual sloth."
First, I would say to Matt, if the shoe fits, wear it.
Second, isn't your simile itself intellectual sloth? Pig farmers aren't trying to bury anything with their slop-slinging.
Pig farmers feed slop to their unfussy livestock to sustain them.
Another dictionary meaning of "slop" is "drivel." That's what Fox News feeds to its audience to sustain its rage.
Maybe a better simile?
